Corduliidae - Emerald Dragonflies, Green-eyed Skimmers

We have recorded three genera of corduliids in Ecuador, and others are possible. The members of this group are characterized by metallic green reflectance on the thorax. They differ from most libellulids (in a broad sense) in that the anal loop is not boot-shaped. They breed in fast-flowing forest streams. Garrison et al. (2006) separated these genera in Cordiliinae, a subfamily of Libellulidae. Recent DNA and morphological analysys of Dijkstra et al. (2013) fairly strongly relegates Paracordulia to Corduliidae, but leaves Gomphomacromia and Neocordulia in an uncertain position.

Gomphomacromia fallax, male Neocordulia batesi, male Paracordulia sp., male
