Polythoridae- Banner-wings

This family consists of two genera, Cora and Miocora, and seven species in Costa Rica, although three of them may be color forms of one species. All of the species and color forms of Cora occur in the Monteverde area. They are medium-sized damselflies with large eyes and stout bodies that perch on top of leaves and twigs in an upright posture with closed wings. Most have dark bodies with pale cream to blue markings and sometimes with black wingtips. The females are less brightly marked than the males and more difficult to identify. The genitalia are not useful characters for either sex. Cora species are typically found along small streams in forested habitats. The females oviposit in rotten wood or plant stems at or near the water surface. The nymphs can be found among clumps of twigs and dead leaves caught among rocks and branches in flowing water.
