Aeshnidae- Darners, Hawker dragonflies

Eight genera with about 27 species occur in Costa Rica, with six genera and 11 species recorded so far in the Monteverde region. Aeshnids are large, fast-flying dragonflies with large eyes and thorax and a long, thin abdomen. Most have bold green or blue markings on the thorax or abdomen. The females are usually similar to the males in color pattern, though not as brightly colored. These dragonflies feed on the wing so they are usually observed while flying. The males patrol territories, often along the margins of ponds or streams, looking for females. A few species live in streams, but most breed in the still waters of lakes, ponds and swamps.
